Helvetica Light is a variation of Helvetica Black Oregon, made from ash with an oil finish. This version can be disassembled into a flatpack using only locking joints. Two legs, a stretcher, and the tabletop are held together by wedges.
The hallmark of a skilled craftsman lies in their deep understanding of the wood they work with and their ability to establish a dialogue with it. They must balance form and structure while considering the natural fluctuations and transformations the material will undergo over time, influenced by temperature, humidity, and external forces. For instance, a tabletop may expand, contract, or develop a slight curve, and it's crucial to accommodate these changes without compromising the integrity of the piece. In this instance, the tabletop is ingeniously attached to the legs, allowing it to "float" on the structure, preventing cracks or warping.
This meticulous process mirrors the artisan's ethical and philosophical stance. Frank Buschmann views woodworking joints not just as aesthetic or functional elements, but as metaphors for new possibilities or necessary compromises. They teach us to embrace limitations while preserving our freedom.
